As part of the DPLUS204 project “Enhancing Resilience of the Akrotiri Salt Lake Ecosystem”, a pilot bryophyte application took place at the Lady’s Mile restoration site on February 4th, 2026. This activity is implemented within the project’s Biological Soil Crust restoration actions, supporting soil stabilisation and ecosystem recovery. Bryophytes contribute to reducing erosion, improving water retention, and enhancing habitat resilience to climate change.

Pilot action for the management of Tamarix species in the Akrotiri Marsh area. Young trees were carefully removed and replanted at designated managed access sites for landscaping purposes and to reduce visual pollution. 

Installation of metal bars for access management control at selected Red Data Book sites at the Akrotiri Salt Lake area. 

Implementation of heavy earthmoving works,  including the placement of large boulders, for the development of a permanent access barrier within the Akrotiri Salt Lake.

Site inspection for coordinating the initiation of access management interventions. Sampling water from the small water-retaining ponds in the eucalyptus forest area for biochemical analysis.

Collection of bryophyte samples from soil crusts at Akrotiri Salt Lake to initiate propagation experiments at the OUC laboratory
